Sumitomo (SHI) Cryogenics of America, Inc
SHI’s Advanced Technologies, part of the Mechatronics Segment of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd., is a global leader in cryogenic and vacuum technologies, supporting the medical, semiconductor, flat panel, general coating and scientific research markets. With more than six decades of expertise and a presence spanning Asia, Europe and the United States, the organization delivers innovative cryocooler and cryopump solutions that set industry standards for performance, reliability, and long-term value.
Through its commitment to continuous improvement and advanced engineering, SHI develops world-class technologies that support applications from high-precision manufacturing to cutting-edge research environments. This dedication is reflected in the company’s extensive installed base of cryogenic systems worldwide and its robust global support network, which includes thirteen offices and numerous representatives providing responsive sales, service and technical expertise.
A key example of SHI’s technological leadership is its newest generation of single-stage GM cryocoolers—the CH‑160D3 Series. Introduced as SHI’s highest‑capacity single-stage models to date, the CH‑160D3 Series includes the CH‑160D3LT, designed for 20 K applications, and the CH‑160D3 for high-capacity performance at 77 K. The CH‑160D3LT delivers up to 90/100 W at 20 K (50/60 Hz), while the CH‑160D3 achieves an industry-leading 600/725 W at 77 K (50/60 Hz).
Engineered by combining the best design elements from SHI’s CH and RDK product lines, the CH‑160D3 Series incorporates several proprietary technologies. These include Whisper® technology for significantly quieter operation and Displex® pneumatic drive technology, which reduces the number of moving parts to minimize wear. Additional innovations—such as an enhanced gas-balanced valve that lowers torque and mechanical stress, plus a redesigned stem drive and heat exchanger—improve efficiency, extend maintenance intervals, and reduce total cost of ownership.
Optimized for demanding and emerging applications, the CH‑160D3 Series supports liquid hydrogen and nitrogen production, clean energy technologies, and a wide range of high-temperature superconducting systems, including cables, fault current limiters, ship motors, wind turbines and accelerator magnets.
Each unit is CE-compliant and operates with two F-70 Compressors—highly reliable, water-cooled, three-phase units designed exclusively to deliver high-pressure, oil-free helium to SHI cryogenic refrigerators. These compressors feature scroll capsules and an industry-leading 30,000-hour maintenance interval.
Sumitomo (SHI) Cryogenics of America, Inc. (SCAI)—the North American division of SHI’s Advanced Technologies—leads regional design, manufacturing, sales, and service activities. Headquartered in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with additional locations in Illinois, California, Texas and Arizona, SCAI provides customers throughout the Americas with direct access to the full capabilities of SHI’s cryogenic engineering, applications expertise, and comprehensive support infrastructure.
